As usual when I try to start a new project something gets in the way. This time it’s been a while without updates, but to compensate for that, today I’ll write about a very nice remix that I actually heard a couple of minutes ago. While I’ve tried to avoid Final Fantasy songs, mostly because that’s what many think about when it comes to video game music. Probably because Nobuo Uematsu is such an amazing composer.

My friend Zoiy who also enjoys a good remix, he’ll be one of my main sources to find new songs to write about, sent this song to me earlier, and it’s actually a remix of one of my favorite songs from Final Fantasy VII. While the beginning of the song made me think about the IIDX song 5.8.8, which is also good, it soon plays the familiar melody of Cosmo Canyon. The piano arrangement is great and the strings just adds to the greatness. When the wonderful bass line begins there’s also some very nice deep drum sounds that makes me think about those big taiko drums. Just listen to it and you’ll probably get what I mean. Reuben Kee managed to make a great song even better, and it might be even more in the line of what Nobuo Uematsu intended to create while he was limited by the specs of the Sony Playstation.

Here it is, Ascension to Cosmo Canyon by Reuben Kee, enjoy!

Today it’s time for the first shorter post in this new series where I’ll mention a single remix of a video game tune that I think are worth checking out. I got the idea to start out with this song after watching the Earthbound run at SpeedDemosArchive.com yesterday. Although the song isn’t from that game it’s still kind of related to it.It’s actually a song from the next part of the Mother series, Mother 3. The game, like so many other good games, were never translated from Japanese so I’ve never played it myself, although there is a fan translation of it available. Should be easy to find if you just google it.

I first heard this remix while playing Osu! with a friend, and I think he’s the one who found it. It’s made by REDALiCE, and if YouTube’s correct it’s called Porky of Porky of Porky of Porky.

And if you want to hear the original song here’s a link to it at YouTube.

The image and the title may not have much in common, except for the genre and that both were among the first adventure games I played and they might be one of the reasons why I got hooked. The title is actually one of the many ways you can die in the old MacVenture-game Shadowgate. The version I played was the NES port, which was in color, had great music and doesn’t have a limited inventory. They had to change the interface a bit as you don’t have access to a mouse while playing it on the NES, and at times it’s a bit inconvenient , but most of the time it works just fine. Another thing with that version is that it was translated to Swedish, which is my native language. The problem with the translation is that they misspelled some of the words, and they’re quite common too. But as mentioned earlier, I think it’s a great game and it got me to appreciate adventure games, even though you can be stuck for weeks just because you didn’t think of the one far-fetched solution that one of the developers thought about when he tried to figure out how to be as mean and unforgiving as possible.

The picture above is from another great game. Simon the Sorcerer. The first two games are great and Simon the Sorcerer 2 was the first point-and-click adventure I played. It’s not my favorite series in the genre but I still think you should check it out if you want two good adventure games. I’m not too fond of the later games in the series, mostly because of the 3D-graphics. Point-and-click-games should be in 2D, if you ask me at least. Another great series that you probably heard of is Monkey Island. And it’s the same thing there. The 3D games are inferior to the 2D games. Although the fifth game of the series, Tales of Monkey Island were pretty good. Mostly because the controls were a lot better than part four; Escape from Monkey Island. Just to add some more recommendations, try the first three games, the special editions of the first two are also great, especially the second game. Other good SCUMM-games from LucasArts are Sam n’ Max: Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig and LOOM.

But not all 3D games are bad. As I mentioned earlier, Tales of Monkey Island is worth playing, and so is Escape from Monkey Island if you can stand the awkward controls. But the best of those games might be Grim Fandango, which is also made by LucasArts. It’s a lot different in theme and story, and the controls are as awkward as they are in EMI, but it’s still worth a shot if you want a great Adventure Game.

I tend to prefer the SCUMM-games from LucasArts over the SCI-games from Sierra. The Sierra games (like King’s Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry) got some great games, but the thing I don’t like is that you can die if you make a small misstake. Sure it makes the games more challenging, but it can also be a bit tedious to replay large portions of the game just because you forgot to save. Good game to try are Space Quest 4 & 5 and King’s Quest 6. I haven’t played all of them but those are the ones I enjoyed the most of the ones I’ve played.

A newer game that I still haven’t beat, too many games to play and too little time, is Machinarium. The graphics are great and the puzzles are challenging enough. It shouldn’t be that expensive if you manage to find it, I got it from one of the Indie game bundles from humblebundle.com a while ago. I might do some more recommendations later as there are way more good adventure games and I think my next post about this might be about two games inspired by a world created by one of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett.

Once again I managed to squeeze in a song from the Heroes of Might and Magic-series, though it’s now called Might & Magic Heroes because Ubisoft decided to change the name. This song is called Summer Plains from Might & Magic Heroes 6. Originally it was composed by Paul Anthony Romero and Rob King for Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and was then called Grasslands theme.

As we’ve already mentioned, spaceships are another form of transportation, but this time it isn’t about an aerobot transformer. Instead it’s about the kind that humans fly through space and shoot evil aliens, and no it isn’t about Space Invaders. And to be honest, this will include a lot of songs from the game as it’s a remix/medley featured in a rythm-game to the PS2 and Arcade. Here’s a hint: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start.

From Beatmania IIDX 10th style, here’s Mr. T – GRADIUS – FULL SPEED. As the titles says it features some songs from the old NES classic Gradius. The game the Konami Code was invented for. Even though the original soundtrack is really good, I do prefer this remix as I get to listen to some of my favorite video games tunes in two minutes, and it’s pretty fun to play in IIDX too!

My second song this week will also feature one of those boring racing games. But even if this song is a lot different from my previous entry it might actually be better. They’re kinda hard to compare. This time it’s actually a song from an arcade game and even if I’ve never played the arcade version myself I’ve played a sequel quite much. And I have to say that it’s very entertaining, even if my friends beat me most of the time.

The game I’m talking about is of course Out Run, the high action road racing adventure from Sega. The only version of it that I’ve played is the Sega Master System. But the song is also featured in most , if no t every, of the sequels. The fun thing about Out Run, and Out Run 2 SP which I’ve played, is that you can choose music yourself, by switching channels on the games “radio”. The radio stations only feature one song, but who cares, if you can play to Magical Sound Shower as many times as you want, it’s just that great.

And as a bonus, if you want to hear a cover version by a great Danish band called Press Play on Tape, click here.

Lately many got hooked to the old series Transformers once again as they released a couple of live action movies. But Transformers aren’t the only humanoid robots who transform into various kind of vehicles. What if the guardian of the Earth, a highly sophisticated aerobot transformer, had to venture into a planet-like object that some evil aliens launched towards the Earth to initiate it’s self-destruct mechanism?

The game is called The Guardian Legend, a hybrid action-adventure/shoot ‘em up released in 1988. In the Adventure part of the game you explore different areas and look for clues to the next dungeon, and the dungeons are where the shoot ‘em up part of the game takes place. The game is pretty fun but becomes really hard and a bit confusing really fast.

As I said in an earlier post, the theme this week will be ‘transportation’. And one thing you could use for that is cars. I’m not sure yet but that might be a recurring thing this week. So what can you do with a car? Casual driving or racing. Or why not play a racing video game. There’s a lot of them and while the ones from the past isn’t as realistic and good-looking as the new ones, some of them had really good music. This song is one of the first racing games I played to the old Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and I fell in love with the song at once.

The game I’m talking about is called Top Gear, or Top Racer if you played the Japanese version of it. The gameplay is pretty similar to other racing games of the time, especially games like Lotus, which was made by the same developers. Coincidence? I got no idea to be honest, but those games got great music. I’m not a big fan of racing games myself, but it doesn’t matter as long as I get to listen to great tunes like these, I’ll play them.

The game itself can brag about stuff like horrible controls and a Japanese version which is way easier than the other releases. So what is this mysterious game I’m talking about?

The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Just writing the title of the game reminds me of the horrible samples used in the game. The game got three modes, and while you play the game you’ll encounter all of them. The song is from the first of them, which feels like a bad copy of Double Dragon or River City Ransom. You’ll walk around and punch, kick or even jump kick thugs and alligators. And that’s about it. In the second mode you drive around in a car, shoot stuff and throw grenades at aeroplanes. And the third one is when the game switches to a first person view and you get to use the good ‘ol zapper. And apparently you can shoot a stick of dynamite in mid-air to make sure it doesn’t explode.

The song is from the fighting-mode of the game, which suits the theme, it might not be the best song in the game, but i really do like it. The good part of the song doesn’t start until around 00:24 though.
