  1. Remix Tuesday #2

    Best of Video Game Music

As usual when I try to start a new project something gets in the way. This time it’s been a while without updates, but to compensate for that, today I’ll write about a very nice remix that I actually heard a couple of minutes ago. While I’ve tried to avoid Final Fantasy songs, mostly because that’s what many think about when it comes to video game music. Probably because Nobuo Uematsu is such an amazing composer.

My friend Zoiy who also enjoys a good remix, he’ll be one of my main sources to find new songs to write about, sent this song to me earlier, and it’s actually a remix of one of my favorite songs from Final Fantasy VII. While the beginning of the song made me think about the IIDX song 5.8.8, which is also good, it soon plays the familiar melody of Cosmo Canyon. The piano arrangement is great and the strings just adds to the greatness. When the wonderful bass line begins there’s also some very nice deep drum sounds that makes me think about those big taiko drums. Just listen to it and you’ll probably get what I mean. Reuben Kee managed to make a great song even better, and it might be even more in the line of what Nobuo Uematsu intended to create while he was limited by the specs of the Sony Playstation.

Here it is, Ascension to Cosmo Canyon by Reuben Kee, enjoy!

  2. Remix Tuesday #1

Today it’s time for the first shorter post in this new series where I’ll mention a single remix of a video game tune that I think are worth checking out. I got the idea to start out with this song after watching the Earthbound run at SpeedDemosArchive.com yesterday. Although the song isn’t from that game it’s still kind of related to it. (more…)

  3. The Legend of Zelda

It’s been almost 20 years since I played The Legend of Zelda for the first time. It wasn’t a new game when I first played it, but back then it didn’t matter at all. It was a whole new experience for me. No jumping around on platforms, defeating enemies by jumping on them or capture them in bubbles. Instead it felt like an enormous real adventure. You could also go almost where you wanted, whenever you wanted. That kind of freedom was new to me, and I loved it. (more…)

This time it’s about another means of transportation, by horse. Most people doesn’t really think about this particular game in the series when hearing this song, but I personally think that this remix is quite nice. (more…)

As we’ve already mentioned, spaceships are another form of transportation, but this time it isn’t about an aerobot transformer. Instead it’s about the kind that humans fly through space and shoot evil aliens, and no it isn’t about Space Invaders. And to be honest, this will include a lot of songs from the game as it’s a remix/medley featured in a rythm-game to the PS2 and Arcade. Here’s a hint: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start. (more…)

  6. Best of Video Game Music – Day 21

My second song this week will also feature one of those boring racing games. But even if this song is a lot different from my previous entry it might actually be better. They’re kinda hard to compare. This time it’s actually a song from an arcade game and even if I’ve never played the arcade version myself I’ve played a sequel quite much. And I have to say that it’s very entertaining, even if my friends beat me most of the time. (more…)

  7. Best of Video Game Music – Day 20

Lately many got hooked to the old series Transformers once again as they released a couple of live action movies. But Transformers aren’t the only humanoid robots who transform into various kind of vehicles. What if the guardian of the Earth, a highly sophisticated aerobot transformer, had to venture into a planet-like object that some evil aliens launched towards the Earth to initiate it’s self-destruct mechanism?

As I said in an earlier post, the theme this week will be ‘transportation’. And one thing you could use for that is cars. I’m not sure yet but that might be a recurring thing this week. So what can you do with a car? Casual driving or racing. Or why not play a racing video game. There’s a lot of them and while the ones from the past isn’t as realistic and good-looking as the new ones, some of them had really good music. This song is one of the first racing games I played to the old Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and I fell in love with the song at once.

And it’s finally here, the last song of the fighting theme. It might be the funkiest song this far, and that’s one reason why I like it. The game itself can brag about stuff like horrible controls and a Japanese version which is way easier than the other releases. So what is this mysterious game I’m talking about?

This time I’ve chosen a song that most people don’t really link to fighting. There is some cheating involved since the song is from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Most of the songs in this game are remixed versions from other Nintendo games. I almost like everything about this remix, but the “singing” is horrible.
